Someone else might write something down, keep it hidden, Then discover that I somehow knew what they had written.

There are no supernatural claims involved. Professional mentalism uses a combination of psychology, suggestion, observation, presentation, misdirection and carefully constructed methods.

The result, however, can feel remarkably impossible. And that's rather the point.

Mind reading is just one part of my close-up magic. I also perform card magic, coin magic and sleight of hand. So the experience can move naturally between different types of magic depending on the audience.

Weddings are an excellent setting for mind reading magic.

Guests naturally gather in smaller groups throughout the day. Particularly during drinks receptions, photographs and other periods when everyone is waiting for the next part of the wedding.

That's where close-up magic can fit beautifully.

I can move between groups and perform interactive mind reading without requiring a stage or stopping the entire wedding.

Perhaps one guest thinks of a childhood friend. Someone else makes an apparently free choice.

Another person writes down a word that they believe nobody could possibly know.

Then the impossible happens.

The bride and groom can remain the centre of attention while I provide entertainment for their guests.

And if I can keep Uncle Dave entertained for ten minutes without him explaining how he would have done the trick himself, that's a successful wedding.

This is usually the question I get asked immediately afterwards.

Unfortunately, if I explained everything here, I'd be doing a rather poor job of keeping my secrets.

What I can say is that professional mind reading involves considerably more than simply watching someone's facial expressions.

Psychology, language, suggestion, timing, observation and misdirection can all play a role.

Human beings are also fascinating creatures.

We like to believe our decisions are completely random and independent.

Sometimes they are. Sometimes they're not quite as random as we imagine.

That creates opportunities for a magician to construct apparently impossible demonstrations involving choices, predictions and thoughts.

It's one of the reasons I find mentalism so fascinating.

And after a quarter of a century performing professionally, I've learned that presentation is just as important as the method.

Knowing how something works isn't enough.

You have to make people care about what happens.

I don't perform mind reading in isolation.

My performances can combine mentalism, card magic, coin magic and sleight of hand, depending on the audience and the occasion.

A card trick might lead into a mind-reading experiment.

A spectator might make a choice that becomes part of a prediction.

Or an ordinary object can become involved in an apparently impossible demonstration.
