What Is Sleight of Hand Magic?

Sleight of hand is the art of manipulating objects in a way that appears impossible to the person watching.

Cards can change and vanish. They appear in unexpected places. Or seemingly travel from one location to another. Coins can disappear from one hand and appear somewhere else. Borrowed objects can behave in ways they really shouldn't.

The important word is appears. There's no supernatural power involved. There is technique, timing, psychology, misdirection and an awful lot of practice.

I've spent many years learning how to make apparently simple actions look completely natural. That's harder than it sounds.

If you move your hand in an unusual way, people notice. Even when you stare at the wrong hand, people notice. If you suddenly become very interested in the ceiling for no obvious reason, people become suspicious.

Although sometimes I do look at the ceiling. It keeps the pigeons nervous.

Sleight of hand works because the audience sees exactly what the magician wants them to see while missing the important moment.

That combination of skill and psychology is what makes close-up magic so powerful.

Sleight of hand is particularly effective at parties because it doesn't require a stage or a formal performance area.

I can walk around your event and perform for small groups of guests. One group might experience card magic.

Playing cards are one of the classic tools of the sleight of hand magician.

A deck of cards is small enough to carry anywhere. Yet it provides an almost endless number of possibilities.

Cards can be controlled, secretly located, switched, transformed and produced in impossible places.

But the best card magic isn't really about the cards.

It's about the person holding them.

I can have someone choose a card themselves, remember it and even shuffle the deck.

They may then make decisions that appear to put the magician at an enormous disadvantage.

And that's when things become interesting. The spectator believes they are in control.

That's exactly how I like it. The challenge for the magician is to make every necessary move look ordinary.

A genuine professional doesn't want the audience thinking:

"That's a strange way of holding a deck of cards."

You want them thinking:

"He's just shuffling."

That difference is everything.

Coin and Money Magic

Sleight of hand isn't limited to cards.

Coins and money are wonderful objects for close-up magic because they're familiar.

Everybody knows what a coin looks like.

You can hold one in your hand or even examine it.

You can even squeeze your fingers around it.

And then it disappears.

Or apparently does.

Coins can travel from one hand to another, appear underneath objects or seemingly pass through solid surfaces.

Money can also be incorporated into routines, which can create some wonderfully personal moments.

The beauty of using ordinary objects is that there is nowhere for the audience to hide behind the excuse that the magician brought a special piece of equipment.

It's your coin or card.

Your borrowed object.

And you're holding it.

That makes the mystery much harder to explain.

Magic With Borrowed Objects

One of my favourite aspects of close-up magic is using objects that belong to the spectators.

A borrowed ring, coin, banknote or another everyday item can become part of the magic.

This can make the experience feel much more personal.

Imagine handing me your ring. You know exactly what it is. You've had it for years.

You know where it came from. You watch me hold it.

And then something impossible happens.

That's a very different experience from watching me pull an obviously magical-looking prop out of a case.The object already belongs to you. That's why borrowed-object magic can produce such strong reactions.

It removes one of the obvious explanations.

Although if you lend me your car keys, I promise to give them back.

Eventually.

The Psychology Behind Sleight of Hand

There's much more to sleight of hand than dexterity.

A magician needs to understand attention.

Human beings don't process everything they see equally. Our attention moves from one thing to another. Often without us consciously realising it.

A magician can use this.

A gesture, a question, a joke or even an apparently insignificant movement can influence where somebody looks.

This is known as misdirection, although the term can be slightly misleading.

It's not necessarily about making somebody look in the completely opposite direction.

Often it's about making them look at the correct place but interpret what they're seeing incorrectly.

That's much more interesting.

You need to know when to approach a group or when to leave them alone.

You need to recognise when somebody wants to participate and when they'd rather simply watch.
