There is also a difference between parlour magic and a traditional stage show. Parlour magic is designed for a much smaller audience, allowing the performer to work at close range and create considerably more interaction.

So, if you want guests to mingle and experience magic in smaller groups, close-up magic may be the better choice.

If you'd rather bring everyone together for a shared magical experience, parlour magic can be an excellent option.

One of the things I enjoy about parlour magic is the interaction.

You're not sitting miles away from the performer watching something happen on a distant stage.

You're close enough to see the details.

Cards can be borrowed from members of the audience. Objects can be examined. People can take part in the magic themselves.

And because the audience is relatively small, I can react to the people in front of me.

Someone makes a comment and thinks they've worked it out.

Someone confidently announces that they know exactly how the trick works.

This is usually the point where things become particularly entertaining.

A technically difficult trick isn't necessarily a good piece of entertainment.

The magician needs to understand timing, audience management, humour, psychology and misdirection.

The audience shouldn't simply see a clever method.

They should experience something that feels impossible.

That's the difference.
