Our brains are incredibly good at making assumptions.

That's useful in everyday life. But it also means that a magician can sometimes guide the audience towards an incorrect conclusion without them realising it.

The result is that wonderful moment when somebody knows they were watching carefully but still has absolutely no idea what happened.

One of the most misunderstood parts of magic is misdirection.

Many people imagine misdirection means waving your hand around while secretly doing something sneaky with the other one.

There's much more to it than that.

I've explained how misdirection works in magic in much greater detail, because understanding attention is fundamental to understanding what a magician actually does.

At a wedding, this becomes particularly fascinating.

You could be looking directly at my hands and still miss the important moment.

That's because seeing something isn't necessarily the same as noticing it.

And when you realise afterwards that you were looking in exactly the right place, that's when the magic really gets under your skin.

Not every magical experience needs to involve a deck of cards.

Mind reading can be particularly effective at weddings because it feels personal.

I can perform demonstrations of psychological illusion and mind reading that involve members of the audience making decisions, thinking of information and seemingly keeping things completely private.

Then I reveal information I shouldn't possibly know.

This is the sort of thing that produces the classic wedding reaction:

“There's no way you knew that.”

First, look at experience.

Wedding entertainment is different from performing a magic show in a theatre.

A wedding magician needs to understand the rhythm of a wedding day. Work around photographers, speeches and food, approach groups naturally and adapt to different audiences.

Experience matters. So does personality.

Your magician will potentially meet your grandparents. Your best friends and work colleagues.

You want somebody who can communicate with all of them.

Most importantly, you want someone who understands that the magic is there to enhance the occasion.

It shouldn't dominate it.
