Why I Enjoy Performing in Coventry

Hi! Andy Field here. One of the things I love about being a magician is that no two working days are ever quite the same.

One event might involve a room full of wedding guests meeting for the first time.

Another might find me entertaining a group of people who have spent the last ten minutes confidently explaining why magic is impossible.

They're usually right about the last part. Unfortunately for them, that doesn't stop me.

After a quarter of a century of performing magic, I still enjoy the variety of live entertainment. Every audience has its own personality. Every occasion has its own atmosphere. Plus there is always the possibility of an unexpected reaction that makes the whole experience memorable.

Coventry is one of the places where I get to enjoy that variety. It's a city with its own character. It has a mixture of historic surroundings and modern venues, and plenty of different occasions that bring people together.

Every Event Has Its Own Personality

Ask any entertainer whether every audience is the same. You will soon discover the answer is no.

At some events, people are naturally outgoing. They're happy to join in, ask questions and make jokes.

At others, the guests are a little more reserved at first. Perhaps because they don't know everyone in the room.

I enjoy both situations.

One of the pleasures of close-up magic is seeing how people respond when something unexpected happens right in front of them.

The initially sceptical guest can become the most enthusiastic person in the group. The person who claims to know every trick in the book suddenly finds themselves searching for an explanation.

And then there's the person who insists they weren't fooled, despite having spent the last thirty seconds staring at their own hands.

I wouldn't dream of arguing.

The important thing is to read the room and let the entertainment develop naturally. I don't believe every guest needs to react in exactly the same way. Some people laugh. Some look astonished. Others immediately want to know whether their friends saw what just happened.

That mixture is part of the fun.

The Enjoyment of Performing at Weddings

Weddings are particularly enjoyable because they bring together people who may have very different connections to the couple.

There might be childhood friends or distant relatives. Maybe work colleagues and family members who haven't seen one another for years.

Some guests know everybody. Others are trying to remember which side of the family they're supposed to be on.

It's a wonderful environment for shared experiences.

I love the moment when a small group of guests starts chatting about something completely ordinary. Then, a few moments later, everyone is laughing about an impossible piece of magic.

Suddenly, people who had only just introduced themselves have something in common. They can compare what they saw. Exchange theories and enjoy the fact that nobody seems to have a sensible explanation.

Of course, weddings aren't all about the entertainment. They're about the couple. Plus their families and the memories being created throughout the day. My job is to add something enjoyable to the occasion without taking attention away from what really matters.

Getting that balance right is part of being an experienced performer.

The Unexpected Moments at Private Parties

Unforgettable reactions and unexpected surprises when Andy Field performs close-up magic.

Private parties can be tremendous fun because you never quite know how the evening will unfold.

A birthday celebration might begin with a few quiet conversations and gradually turn into a lively gathering.

An anniversary party might bring together generations of the same family. Another event might involve a group of friends who have known one another for years and are more than happy to give each other a hard time.

That last group can be particularly entertaining.

People who know one another well often enjoy seeing their friends caught completely off guard. If somebody has spent the evening being the cleverest person in the room, a little unexplained magic can provide an excellent opportunity for their friends to remind them of it.

Naturally, I remain entirely neutral in these matters.

What I enjoy most is the atmosphere that develops when people relax and start having fun together. Magic gives them something unexpected to experience. While the humour helps make the encounter feel natural rather than formal.

The best moments often happen when nobody is trying too hard. A simple conversation can lead to a surprising reaction, a burst of laughter or a story that gets repeated long after the party has finished.

Those are the moments that make live performance worthwhile.

Corporate Events Can Be Full of Surprises

Corporate events offer a different kind of challenge. This is one of the reasons I enjoy their variety.

Sometimes the guests already know one another well. On other occasions, people are meeting clients, colleagues or business contacts for the first time. There may be a formal programme to follow. Plus important conversations taking place and a schedule that needs to run smoothly.

The entertainment has to fit around all of that.

I enjoy finding the right tone for the occasion. A relaxed company celebration might allow plenty of playful interaction. A more formal gathering calls for a slightly different approach.

The objective isn't to interrupt every conversation or make everybody stop what they're doing. It's to add something memorable to the experience and give people another reason to smile.

There's something satisfying about seeing a group of professionals who have been discussing business suddenly become a collection of curious spectators. Everyone trying to work out how something apparently impossible could have happened.

For a few moments, job titles and business conversations can take a back seat. Everyone is simply enjoying the mystery.

And no, having a degree in mathematics doesn't automatically make you better at catching a magician out. I've met plenty of people who would be delighted to explain that to you.

Coventry's Variety Keeps Things Interesting

One thing I appreciate about performing around Coventry is the variety of settings associated with the area.

The city and its surroundings include historic buildings and country-house venues. Also the contemporary event spaces and larger facilities used for business gatherings and celebrations.

Places such as Coombe Abbey Hotel, Ansty Hall and St Mary's Guildhall illustrate the historic and traditional side of the area's event scene. Elsewhere, venues such as Coventry Building Society Arena, Heart of England Conference and Events Centre, The Box at FarGo Village and The Slate at Warwick Conferences reflect the range of modern and professional settings available.

Each type of venue has its own character. The surroundings, the layout. The reason people have gathered all contribute to the atmosphere of an occasion.

I find that variety interesting because the experience of performing is never simply about repeating the same routine in a different room. It involves understanding the people in front of you. All the time adapting to the circumstances and making the most of the occasion.

After All These Years, I Still Love the Reactions

You might think that after more than a quarter of a century performing magic, the reactions would become predictable.

They don't.

People are wonderfully unpredictable. One person might burst out laughing. Another might stare in complete silence. Somebody else might immediately accuse their friend of helping me.

That last accusation is particularly satisfying when the friend in question looks even more confused than everyone else.

I still enjoy the challenge of presenting magic in a way that feels spontaneous, entertaining and personal. The technical side of the performance matters. However, so does the timing, the humour and the ability to make people feel comfortable.

For me, magic has always been about more than demonstrating a trick. It's about creating an experience that people can enjoy together.

That might mean a shared laugh at a wedding. Or a surprising moment at a birthday party or a conversation starter at a corporate gathering. The circumstances change, but the pleasure of entertaining people remains the same.

And I think that's why live magic continues to appeal to me after all these years.

Why Coventry Remains an Enjoyable Place to Perform

Sharing laughter, magic and memorable moments with lovely people at live events.

Ultimately, what I enjoy about performing in Coventry is the same thing I enjoy about performing anywhere. Its the people and the opportunities to create memorable moments.

A venue provides the setting, an event brings everyone together. The audience gives the occasion its personality. My role is to add a little mystery and something unexpected along the way.

There is no single formula for a great performance. Sometimes the most memorable reaction comes from the guest who was determined not to be impressed. Sometimes it's the laughter from a whole group of people who have just witnessed something they cannot explain.

And sometimes it's the person who asks me to repeat the trick, convinced that the second time will reveal everything.

I'm always happy to oblige.

For me, the real pleasure of performing is knowing that, for a little while, people can forget about their everyday routines and enjoy something unexpected.

After all these years, that's still a pretty good reason to get out of bed and go to work.
