Why Is Andy Field a Popular Magician in Bristol?
Andy Field — professional magician, two-time S.A.M.S. Champion of Close-Up Magic, BBC Hustle consultant and professional performer with more than 25 years of experience.
I've been performing professional magic for more than a quarter of a century. I've entertained thousands of people at weddings, parties, corporate events, anniversaries and private celebrations.
During that time, I've accumulated more than 20 million YouTube views, hundreds of five-star reviews and more than 400 Facebook recommendations. I've also twice become a S.A.M.S. Champion of Close-Up Magic. Plus have had the opportunity to consult for the BBC series Hustle.
So, why is Andy Field such a popular magician in Bristol?
I'd like to tell you it's because I possess genuine supernatural powers.
Sadly, I don't.
I do have a suspiciously large collection of playing cards, though.
The real answer is experience, close-up magic, personality, humour, audience interaction. Also understanding what makes people enjoy an event.
If you're looking for a professional magician in Bristol, here's why so many people choose me.
Experience You Can Trust
Hiring a magician isn't something most people do every Tuesday.
Unless you're a magician.
For everyone else, booking entertainment can involve quite a few questions.
Will the magician be professional? Are the guests going to enjoy it?
Will they actually be good? Or even turn up?
Will they spend three hours telling terrible jokes?
Actually, forget that last one. That's me.
After more than 25 years performing professionally, I've developed a simple philosophy: the magic should make the event better, not become the event.
I perform throughout Bristol for weddings, parties, corporate events and private celebrations, creating entertainment that fits naturally around what is already happening.
The Magic Happens Right in Front of You
One of the biggest reasons people enjoy my performances is that my magic is close-up and interactive.
There isn't usually a huge stage separating me from the audience.
Instead, the magic happens just inches away.
A playing card can be signed and lost in a deck before appearing somewhere impossible.
A borrowed ring can disappear. Coins can vanish. Money can change. Phones and everyday objects can become part of the magic.
And sometimes the person watching becomes the most important part of the trick. That's what makes close-up magic so powerful at weddings and events.
If you've never experienced this style of entertainment before, my guide to Close-Up Magic Explained takes a closer look at what close-up magic actually is. More importantly why it works so well for live events.
It's More Than Just Doing Tricks

Professional Bristol magician Andy Field entertaining a couple with an impressive close-up card trick at an event in Bristol.
Here's something I've learned after thousands of performances.
Knowing magic tricks isn't enough.
You can learn a technically brilliant card trick and still give people a completely forgettable experience.
A professional magician needs to understand people and be a Showman.
You need to know how to approach a group. When to perform. When to leave them alone. How to involve somebody who looks nervous and, most importantly, how to make people laugh.
You also need to recognise when a group has just been given another round of drinks and is suddenly considerably more enthusiastic about magic.
That's experience. My aim isn't simply to demonstrate clever tricks.
It's to create moments people experience together.
Sleight of Hand Takes Years to Master

It doesn't. In fact, speed is often the least important part.
Professional sleight of hand involves technique, timing, psychology, natural movement and misdirection. Plus an enormous amount of practice.
I've spent years practising the tiny details that audiences should never notice.
That's the funny thing about magic.
The harder I've worked to make something look effortless, the less effort the audience thinks I've made.
If you'd like to understand what's actually involved, my Sleight of Hand Magic Explained article takes a much deeper look at the skill and techniques behind professional sleight of hand.
And no, I don't have tiny people hiding inside my sleeves. I've checked.
Why Bristol Loves Close-Up Magic

A fun moment during a close-up magic performance in Bristol as a delighted lady kisses professional magician Andy Field after an entertaining card trick.
There is a reason close-up magic works particularly well at Bristol events.
It gets people talking.
Imagine a wedding reception where guests from different sides of the family are meeting for the first time.
Or a corporate event where people are standing around with a drink, making polite conversation.
Or a birthday party where half the guests know each other and the other half are wondering why they've been invited.
Magic gives people something to share. Suddenly strangers are discussing what they've just seen.
Someone insists they know how the trick worked. Someone else says they definitely saw the secret.
They didn't.
That's the fun of it.
I've explored this subject in Why Bristol Loves Close-Up Magic – The Ultimate Entertainment Choice, including why close-up magic works so well for different types of Bristol events.
The Secret Weapon: Misdirection

An incredible moment captured during a close-up magic performance by professional Bristol magician Andy Field, showing the genuine reactions and memorable experiences his magic creates.
People often assume misdirection means simply making somebody look away.
It's much more sophisticated than that.
A magician can influence attention, expectations and perception without the audience even realising it.
You might be looking directly at my hands and still miss what actually happened.
That's because the human brain doesn't record everything like a video camera.
It makes assumptions. It fills in gaps.
It decides what is important.
And magicians take advantage of those completely normal processes.
My article Misdirection in Magic explores how this works and why misdirection is such an important part of creating impossible-looking magic.
Psychology Is at the Heart of Magic

This is also why psychology plays such an important role in what I do.
A good magician needs to understand people.
Not in a sinister "I've been watching you from behind a bush" sort of way.
Thankfully.
It's about understanding attention, expectations, choices and reactions.
When somebody makes a free choice during a card trick, for example, the magician isn't simply relying on luck.
Presentation, language, timing and psychology can all influence the experience.
I've explored this in much more detail in Psychology in Magic, where I explain some of the fascinating psychological principles behind magic.
Even the Classics Still Work
One of the best examples of this is the Cups and Balls.
It's one of the oldest plots in magic, yet it still has the ability to completely fool modern audiences.
Three cups. Small objects. A few apparently impossible movements.
And suddenly people are staring at the cups as though they've personally offended them.
The reason this classic survives is because great magic isn't dependent on technology.
You don't need lasers, smoke machines or a £40,000 stage production.
You need a strong effect, good technique, presentation and an audience who becomes involved.
That's exactly what I try to bring to my performances in Bristol.
A Bristol Wedding Magician Who Understands Weddings

Professional Bristol magician Andy Field entertaining a bride and groom with an amazing close-up card trick during their wedding celebration.
Weddings are one of my favourite environments for close-up magic.
There are natural periods throughout the day when guests benefit from entertainment. During the drinks reception, while photographs are being taken, between different parts of the wedding and during the evening reception.
I've written The Ultimate Guide to Hiring a Wedding Magician in Bristol to help couples understand exactly what to look for when choosing wedding entertainment.
I also have a dedicated Wedding Magician Bristol article for couples specifically looking for close-up magic for their big day.
The important thing is that the magic works around the wedding rather than disrupting it.
After all, I don't want the bride saying:
"Andy, could you please stop performing? The registrar is waiting."
Although that would certainly make for an interesting review.
Bristol Corporate Events, Parties and Celebrations

Of course, weddings aren't the only occasions where I perform.
I also entertain at corporate events, birthday parties, anniversaries and other celebrations.

For private celebrations, my Bristol Party Magician article focuses specifically on parties and celebrations.
I've also written The Magic Touch for Bristol Events – Magician for Corporate Events to Parties about using magic across different types of Bristol events.
And if you're celebrating a special milestone, Anniversary Magician Bristol explains how close-up magic can add something memorable to an anniversary celebration.
Ten Reasons to Hire a Bristol Magician
Sometimes you don't need convincing that magic is entertaining.
You just need someone to explain why it makes sense for your particular event.
That's why I've also put together 10 Irresistible Reasons to Hire a Magician for Your Next Bristol Event.
From breaking the ice between guests to providing entertainment without requiring a stage, close-up magic can fit into an event remarkably easily.
And unlike a giant inflatable dinosaur, it doesn't require its own postcode.
What Does a Magician Cost in Bristol?

"How much does a magician cost in Bristol?"
It's a perfectly sensible question.
My approach is slightly different from simply charging an hourly rate. The fee reflects the performance, experience, preparation, expertise and entertainment provided rather than putting a stopwatch on every minute.
I've written How Much Does a Magician Cost in Bristol? to help anyone planning an event understand what they should consider when budgeting for professional magic.
So, Why Is Andy Field So Popular in Bristol?

Professional Bristol magician Andy Field creating smiles and laughter as he entertains two guests with fun, interactive close-up magic at an event in Bristol.
Ultimately, I think it comes down to something quite simple.
People remember how you made them feel.
They might not remember the exact method behind a card trick.
They probably won't remember every word I said.
But they'll remember laughing with their friends.
They'll remember the impossible moment when something disappeared.
They'll remember their own wedding guest screaming because I knew the card they were thinking of.
And they'll definitely remember saying:
"How did you do that?"
That's the reaction I'm looking for.
My experience, awards, reviews and millions of YouTube views provide reassurance that I know what I'm doing.
But when I walk into a Bristol wedding, party or corporate event, none of those things matter. Not unless I can entertain the people standing in front of me.
That's why I don't simply perform tricks.
I create experiences.
And if people leave the event smiling, laughing and arguing about how the magic was done, then I've done my job.
As for the secret? I'm afraid that's the one thing I'm not telling you.
I've got to keep at least some secrets. I'm a magician, after all.
