Professional Sleight of Hand Magician Bristol

Professional magician Andy Field. Sleight of hand magician for audiences in Bristol.

Sleight of hand magician Bristol is a phrase that perfectly describes one of the most fascinating forms of magic you can experience.

There is something very special about watching a magician perform inches away from you. No enormous stage. No complicated machinery. No smoke and mirrors.

Just you, the magician and an ordinary object. An object that suddenly starts doing something it shouldn't.

A playing card appears, disappears and changes. A borrowed ring vanishes and turns up somewhere impossible. Coins jump from one hand to another. Even your own mobile phone can become part of the magic.

And the really frustrating bit? You were watching the whole time.

I'm Andy Field, a professional close-up magician performing at weddings, parties, corporate events and celebrations throughout Bristol. I've been performing magic for a quarter of a century. I am also a two-time S.A.M.S. Champion of Close-Up Magic.

As well as having consulted for the BBC series Hustle. I'm also backed by hundreds of five-star reviews from delighted clients.

What Is Sleight of Hand Magic?

Sleight of hand is the art of manipulating objects in such a way that the audience believes they have seen something impossible.

It might involve cards, coins, borrowed objects, rings, money or everyday items.

The magician isn't relying on a big stage illusion. Instead, the magic happens right in front of you.

In fact, that's one of the reasons I love sleight of hand so much.

The closer you are, the more impossible it becomes.

If you'd like to learn more about the techniques behind this fascinating art, take a look at my detailed guide to Sleight of Hand Explained. Don't worry. I'm not going to reveal all my secrets. I've got to leave myself something to do at the next wedding.

Why Is Sleight of Hand So Amazing?

One of the great things about sleight of hand is that it uses objects that everybody recognises.

A deck of cards, coin, ring, money or phone.

There's nothing particularly magical about any of those things.

And that's precisely what makes the magic so effective.

You know what a playing card is supposed to do. You know where your ring is.

So when something impossible happens with one of those objects, your brain immediately starts trying to work out how it happened.

And that's where the fun begins.

Sleight of Hand Magician Bristol for Weddings

Weddings are one of my favourite places to perform sleight of hand magic.

There are usually several natural opportunities during the day when guests are together but don't necessarily have anything to do.

While the photographs are being taken, for example. This is a great time I can entertain guests who are waiting around.

During the drinks reception, I can move between groups performing short, interactive pieces of magic.

Nobody has to sit down or to watch a lengthy show.

I simply join a group, introduce myself and get the magic happening.

And because sleight of hand is performed close up, guests become part of the experience rather than simply watching from a distance.

Sleight of Hand for Bristol Parties

Planning a birthday party, anniversary or special celebration?

A sleight of hand magician can be a brilliant way of getting people talking.

You might have guests who don't know each other particularly well.

Within seconds, a magic trick can give them something to laugh about and talk about together.

One person chooses a card. Another lends me a ring. Someone else holds onto a coin.

Suddenly, everybody is involved.

And unlike a traditional entertainment act, I don't need a stage or a large performance area.

I can perform around tables, in a lounge, during a drinks reception or virtually anywhere your guests happen to be.

If you're planning a celebration, have a look at my Bristol Party Magician page for more ideas.

Sleight of Hand at Corporate Events in Bristol

Sleight of hand also works particularly well at corporate events.

Conferences, awards evenings, dinners, networking events and company celebrations can all have periods where guests are waiting, chatting or moving between different parts of the event.

That's an ideal time for close-up magic.

Rather than interrupting the event with a formal performance, I can mingle with guests and perform for small groups.

It creates conversations and gets people laughing.

And, perhaps most importantly, it gives people something memorable to talk about.

Cards, Coins, Rings and Borrowed Objects

Andy Field demonstrates sleight of hand using borrowed everyday items, creating an interactive close-up magic experience for audiences in Bristol.

Sleight of hand doesn't have to be limited to playing cards.

Cards are obviously a classic.

But I also perform magic with coins, money, rings, elastic bands, keys, mobile phones and other everyday objects.

Sometimes the strongest magic comes from something that belongs to the spectator.

Imagine taking someone's ring. They've been wearing it all day. They know exactly what it looks like.

Then it disappears. That's the sort of moment that gets a genuine reaction.

And yes, sometimes the spectator looks at me as though I've just committed a minor criminal offence.

I haven't. (Probably).

Why Close-Up Magic Feels So Impossible

Powerful sleight of hand all day long to impress and delight

There's a reason close-up magic can be so powerful. You're not watching from twenty metres away.

You're standing right next to the magician and can see his hands and the objects.

You can even hold some of them yourself. Yet somehow, the impossible still happens.

This is where sleight of hand and close-up magic overlap beautifully.

There is also a more intimate way of presenting magic that sits somewhere between traditional stage magic and close-up performance.

Parlour magic is performed for a small group of people in a more intimate setting, allowing everyone to feel close to the action while still enjoying the atmosphere of a proper magic performance.

For smaller parties, private gatherings and certain Bristol events, this can be a particularly enjoyable format. If you'd like to explore this style of entertainment, I've written more about Parlour Magician Bristol.

If you're interested in the wider world of close-up magic, I've written a complete guide explaining Close-Up Magic Explained.

It's Not Just About the Trick

Andy's performance of the Cups and Balls has over 200 000 views on YouTube

A good sleight of hand magician isn't simply someone who knows hundreds of tricks.

It's also about timing, presentation, psychology, communication and misdirection.

The technique might be incredibly complicated. But the audience shouldn't see the technique.

They should simply experience the impossible. That's why I spend as much time thinking about how a trick is presented as I do about the mechanics behind it.

The best magic doesn't feel like a demonstration. It feels like something that has genuinely happened to you.

The Psychology Behind Sleight of Hand

Andy Field performing an impressive sleight of hand card trick for two guests, demonstrating close-up magic and entertaining guests at an event in Bristol.

Your eyes don't actually record everything happening around you.

Your brain constantly filters information, makes assumptions and decides what it believes is important.

Magicians take advantage of that.

A tiny movement can attract your attention at precisely the wrong moment.

A perfectly ordinary action can hide something important.

And sometimes the thing you're concentrating on most isn't the thing you should be watching at all.

That's why psychology is such an important part of magic.

I've explored this subject in much more detail in my article about How Psychology Works in Magic.

Misdirection: You're Looking Right at It

One of the biggest misconceptions about misdirection is that it simply means making someone look somewhere else.

It's much more subtle than that.

Good misdirection can involve attention, expectation, timing, suggestion and human psychology.

You can be looking directly at the magician's hands and still miss what actually happened.

Which is rather annoying when you think about it.

But that's exactly what makes it magical.

I've written a complete guide to How Misdirection Works in Magic if you'd like to explore the subject further.

Why Bristol Is a Great City for Magic

Bristol has everything you need for great close-up entertainment.

It's a lively city with restaurants, hotels, wedding venues, corporate spaces, private homes and countless places where people get together to celebrate.

And because sleight of hand doesn't require a stage, it can fit into almost any event.

Whether you're getting married in Bristol, organising a birthday party or arranging a corporate evening, the magic can come to your guests rather than making your guests come to the magic.

That's one of the reasons close-up magic works so well.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sleight of hand magician?

A sleight of hand magician specialises in manipulating cards, coins and everyday objects to create apparently impossible effects using highly practised techniques.

Absolutely. It is particularly well suited to drinks receptions, wedding breakfasts, evening celebrations and periods when guests are waiting between different parts of the day.

No. That's one of its biggest advantages. Sleight of hand is generally performed close to the audience and can take place around tables, in a reception area or while guests are standing and chatting.
