What Is Parlour Magic?

Parlour magic sits somewhere between close-up magic and a traditional stage show.

You don't need a theatre, a huge stage or complicated equipment.

Instead, the magician performs for a small or medium-sized group of people who can gather together and watch the performance from relatively close quarters.

The difference is that everyone gets to experience the same performance at the same time.

With close-up magic, I might move around your wedding or party performing for different groups.

With parlour magic, I can bring a larger group together and perform a structured set while keeping the interaction and personality that make close-up magic so much fun.

It is basically the middle ground.

And sometimes the middle ground is exactly where you want to be.

How Does Parlour Magic Work?

A typical parlour performance might involve cards, coins, borrowed objects, mind reading, sleight of hand and other forms of interactive magic.

The audience isn't simply sitting there watching from a distance.

People can become directly involved.

Someone might choose a card.

Another person might lend me a ring.

Someone else might make a decision that apparently has nothing to do with what happens next.

And then, somehow, everything comes together. That's where the magic becomes particularly entertaining.

Parlour Magic vs Close-Up Magic

The two styles are closely related, but they aren't exactly the same.

Close-up magic is usually performed for small groups. Often while people are standing, chatting, drinking or moving around an event.

Parlour magic brings more people together for a shared performance.

This makes parlour magic particularly useful when you want everyone in a particular area to experience the magic together.

For example, you might have a private party where guests have gathered in a lounge.

You could have a corporate event where everyone has finished dinner.

Or perhaps you're hosting a wedding and want something more structured than a magician simply walking around the room.

Parlour magic gives you that option.

Parlour magic might look relaxed, but there is a lot going on behind the scenes.

A magician needs to understand sleight of hand, timing, psychology, misdirection, audience management and presentation.

It's about controlling attention and expectations.

That's particularly important when performing for a group.

You need to know where people are looking, what they think is happening and how to keep everyone involved.

There's also a strong psychological element.

The audience brings the most important prop of all.

Their brain.

Parlour Magic or Table Top Magic?

It depends on the event.

If your guests are seated around tables and you want entertainment that happens naturally during the meal or between courses, Bath table top magic can be an excellent option.

If you'd rather bring everyone together for a shared performance, parlour magic may be more suitable.

Neither format is automatically better.

They simply create different experiences.

That's why I always think it's worth considering the type of event you're planning before deciding what sort of magic you want.
