Performing Locations in Cheltenham as a Magician

I've been performing professional close-up magic for a quarter of a century, including at weddings, parties, corporate events and private celebrations throughout Cheltenham and Gloucestershire.

If you're looking for a magician in Cheltenham, you'll find more information about my close-up magic, the events I cover and how I work on my main Cheltenham page.

I'm a two-time S.A.M.S. Champion of Close-Up Magic, have performed at more than 1,000 weddings, and have also worked as a magic consultant and hand double for the BBC television series Hustle.

Over the years, I've had the pleasure of performing at some fantastic venues around Cheltenham, from historic buildings and country-house wedding venues to hotels and busy event spaces.

One of the things I particularly enjoy about performing in Cheltenham is the variety of venues.

Close-up magic doesn't require a stage, complicated equipment or everyone sitting quietly facing the front. I can move around the room, perform at tables, mingle with guests during a reception or entertain small groups between courses.

That makes it particularly well suited to the sort of weddings, parties and corporate events regularly held in and around Cheltenham.

Pittville Pump Room

Pittville Pump Room is one of the most recognisable event venues in Cheltenham, and I've had the opportunity to perform there.

The building itself provides a memorable setting for an event, but from a magician's point of view, what matters is how people use the space.

At a wedding, for example, there can be several periods when guests are naturally standing around and chatting. There might be photographs taking place, drinks being served or a short gap before the wedding breakfast.

That's where close-up magic can work particularly well.

Rather than interrupting the event with a formal show, I can move between groups and perform short pieces of magic for the people I meet.

A card appears in an impossible location, something borrowed vanishes, or a seemingly ordinary object ends up somewhere it shouldn't.

The important thing is that the magic becomes part of the occasion rather than taking it over.

I've also performed close-up magic at corporate and private events in Cheltenham, where the same principle applies. People don't necessarily want to be dragged away from conversations for a lengthy performance. They want something interesting to happen while they're already enjoying themselves.

Ellenborough Park

ellenborough park hotelI've also performed at Ellenborough Park, one of the best-known country-house venues around Cheltenham.

A venue like this is particularly well suited to wedding entertainment because there are naturally several different parts of the day where close-up magic can be used.

For example, during the drinks reception, guests are usually moving around, meeting people and enjoying themselves after the ceremony. This creates an ideal opportunity for a magician to circulate.

It's also a useful way of entertaining guests while the bride and groom are occupied with photographs.

That's one of the reasons I often recommend considering magic for the reception rather than thinking of entertainment purely in terms of something that happens later in the evening.

If you're planning a wedding in Cheltenham and are considering a magician, I've written more about this in my guide to being a wedding magician in Cheltenham.

The aim isn't simply to perform tricks.

It's to make the people at the wedding part of what is happening.

Manor By The Lake

manor by the lakeAnother Cheltenham venue where I've performed is Manor By The Lake.

Country-house venues have a very different atmosphere from a hotel ballroom or a town-centre event space, but close-up magic can adapt easily to all of them.

That's one of the reasons I've always preferred close-up magic to entertainment that depends heavily on a particular type of room.

I can perform standing up, at tables, in reception areas, during drinks or while guests are waiting for another part of the event to begin.

And because the performance is happening in small groups, I can adjust what I do according to the people I'm performing for.

Some groups want something visual and quick.

Others enjoy cards and sleight of hand.

Some people immediately start trying to work out how something was done.

That's usually when the fun really starts.

My style is based around powerful close-up magic with strong showmanship and comedy, so the interaction between the people and the magician is every bit as important as the trick itself.

DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham-Cotswolds

Double TreeI've also performed at the DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham-Cotswolds.

Hotel events are particularly interesting for a close-up magician because they can involve very different types of occasions.

I've performed at weddings, corporate functions, private celebrations and dinners, and the entertainment requirements can be completely different from one event to another.

At a corporate dinner, for example, people may have spent the first part of the evening talking business.

By the time dinner or drinks arrive, having something completely unrelated to work happen in front of them can be a great way of changing the atmosphere.

At a wedding, the priority is different.

The guests are there to celebrate, and the magician's job is to add to that atmosphere without getting in the way of the couple, the photographer, the speeches or the meal.

I've written more about the role of a corporate magician in Cheltenham and how close-up magic can fit naturally into corporate events.

Queens Hotel Cheltenham

I've also performed at the Queens Hotel Cheltenham, another venue where close-up magic can work particularly well.

One of the advantages of performing at a hotel is that there are often several natural opportunities for entertainment.

A drinks reception might take place before dinner. Guests might be waiting for a room to be opened. There may be a period between photographs and the meal.

These little gaps can sometimes be more important than people realise.

You don't necessarily need to fill an entire evening with entertainment.

Sometimes ten minutes of great magic at exactly the right point in an event is more useful than an hour of entertainment at the wrong time.

That's something I've learned after more than 25 years of performing professionally.

The best entertainment doesn't fight against the event.

It fits into it.

Cheltenham Town Hall

Cheltenham HallI've also performed at Cheltenham Town Hall, another historic Cheltenham venue used for weddings, parties, corporate events and other celebrations.

Town-hall events can vary enormously in size and style.

For a magician, that means being able to adapt is important.

Close-up magic works particularly well because I don't need a stage or a dedicated performance area. I can work with the space available and move between groups of guests.

At a larger event, I might spend a few minutes with one group before moving on to another.

At a smaller private celebration, I can spend longer with individual groups and make the performance more personal.

That's one of the biggest differences between close-up magic and a conventional stage show.

The audience isn't simply watching.

They're involved.

Performing Magic Around Cheltenham

These venues represent only part of the type of work I've done around Cheltenham.

I've performed at hotels, wedding venues, restaurants, private homes, business premises and event spaces throughout the area.

Cheltenham itself provides a particularly good environment for close-up magic because there are so many different types of events taking place.

There are weddings and engagement celebrations, birthday parties and anniversaries, corporate dinners, Christmas parties, awards evenings and private celebrations.

Each one needs a slightly different approach.

A wedding might call for relaxed entertainment during the drinks reception.

A birthday party might be much more informal and involve people moving between different rooms.

A corporate event may require something polished that works alongside networking and dinner.

And a private dinner might involve a much smaller group where the magic can become more interactive.

That's why I don't believe in treating every booking as though it is exactly the same.

Close-Up Magic at Cheltenham Weddings

Weddings are one of the areas where I've performed the most over the years, having now entertained guests at more than 1,000 weddings.

The biggest advantage of having a magician at a wedding is often not the trick itself.

It's what happens around it.

Guests who don't know each other suddenly have something to talk about.

People who have been standing around waiting for photographs have something to do.

Different groups of friends and family can be brought together through something completely unexpected.

And because close-up magic happens in small groups, it can create lots of little moments throughout the reception rather than one single performance that everyone watches at the same time.

For couples planning a Cheltenham wedding, I've put together a dedicated guide to wedding magic in Cheltenham.

Parties and Private Celebrations

I've also performed at birthday parties, anniversaries and other private celebrations around Cheltenham.

The atmosphere at a private party is usually much more relaxed than at a formal corporate event.

People are there to enjoy themselves, so the magic can become quite interactive.

Cards, borrowed objects, predictions, mind-reading demonstrations and sleight of hand can all work particularly well when the audience is close enough to see everything happening.

I've written separately about being a party magician in Cheltenham, including some of the ways close-up magic can be incorporated into a private celebration.

Corporate Events in Cheltenham

Cheltenham has a strong business and professional community, so corporate work is another important part of my work in the area.

Corporate magic can be used during drinks receptions, networking events, dinners, conferences, awards evenings and Christmas parties.

The trick is knowing when to perform.

A magician shouldn't walk into a conversation between two people discussing something important and demand their attention.

Good close-up magic is about reading the room.

I approach a group when the timing is right, introduce myself, perform something memorable and then move on.

That means the magic adds to the event rather than becoming an interruption.

For companies planning an event in the area, my Cheltenham corporate magician page goes into more detail about the type of corporate work I provide.

Why Close-Up Magic Works at Cheltenham Venues

After performing at so many different venues over the years, one thing has become very clear to me.

The room doesn't need to be perfect.

The entertainment needs to be adaptable.

Close-up magic is unusually flexible because it doesn't depend on a stage, lighting rig or fixed seating arrangement.

I can perform around tables.

I can perform during drinks.

I can perform in reception areas.

I can entertain groups while photographs are taking place.

I can work around dinner rather than competing with it.

And I can adjust the performance depending on the people in front of me.

That flexibility is particularly useful at weddings and parties, where the event can change from one minute to the next.

From Cheltenham's Historic Venues to Modern Events

One of the things I enjoy about working around Cheltenham is the contrast between the venues.

You can have a formal celebration in a historic building one week, a country-house wedding the next, followed by a corporate dinner in a hotel.

The surroundings change.

The guests change.

The occasion changes.

The magic still has to work.

That's where experience becomes important.

After a quarter of a century performing professionally, I've encountered an enormous range of audiences and situations.

I've learned that the strongest close-up magic isn't necessarily about doing the most complicated trick.

It's about knowing what to perform, when to perform it and how to present it.

A technically difficult trick that leaves people cold isn't particularly useful.

A simple piece of magic performed brilliantly can be remembered for years.

My Approach to Close-Up Magic

My approach has always been centred on three things: magic, showmanship and interaction.

I've spent years studying sleight of hand and the psychology behind magic, but technical ability is only part of the job.

A magician also has to communicate.

That's why I put so much emphasis on presentation and comedy.

The audience should feel involved rather than talked at.

They should have something to laugh about as well as something impossible to try to explain afterwards.

I've been fortunate enough to learn from some exceptional names in magic, including Michael Vincent and Darwin Ortiz, and I've also worked behind the scenes as a magic consultant and hand double for the BBC television series Hustle. You can read more about my background, experience and career in my About Andy Field profile.

Those experiences have all influenced the way I approach professional performance today.

Good close-up magic is about much more than knowing how to perform difficult tricks. It is about timing, interaction, confidence and understanding how to make people feel involved in what is happening. I’ve written more about this in my guide to How to Be a Great Showman in Magic.

More Than Just Tricks

More than just tricks — Andy Field entertaining two guests with close-up magic in Cheltenham

When someone books a magician for a wedding, party or corporate event, they're not really buying a collection of card tricks.

They're booking an experience.

The cards, coins and other props are simply the tools.

The real performance comes from the interaction between the magician and the people in the room.

That's particularly important with close-up magic because everything happens right in front of the audience.

There is nowhere to hide.

People can see your hands.

They can interrupt.

They can ask questions.

They can grab the props.

And occasionally they will tell you exactly how they think you did it.

Usually, they're wrong.

But that's part of the fun.

Looking Back at My Cheltenham Performances

A memorable card trick with a kiss during Andy Field's close-up magic in Cheltenham

Having performed at venues including Pittville Pump Room, Ellenborough Park, Manor By The Lake, DoubleTree by Hilton Cheltenham-Cotswolds, Queens Hotel Cheltenham and Cheltenham Town Hall, I have a genuine connection with the local event scene.

Those bookings have covered different types of occasions and different audiences, which is exactly what I enjoy about being a professional close-up magician.

No two events are identical.

Even when I'm returning to a venue I've performed at before, the people in the room will be different and the atmosphere will be different.

That's what keeps the job interesting.

One evening I might be performing sophisticated close-up magic for a corporate dinner.

The next week I could be entertaining wedding guests during a drinks reception.

Then I'm at a private birthday party with everyone trying to catch me out.

It's all close-up magic, but the performance has to change with the occasion.

Looking for a Magician in Cheltenham?

Practicing a very difficult trick

Powerful magic all day long with showmanship

If you're organising a wedding, party, corporate event or private celebration in Cheltenham, I provide professional close-up magic for adult events throughout the area.

I'm based just outside Bristol and regularly travel throughout Gloucestershire and the surrounding areas.

My aim is simple: powerful close-up magic with strong showmanship and comedy, performed in a way that fits naturally into your event.

I've performed professionally for a quarter of a century, entertained guests at more than 1,000 weddings, and built my reputation and Google reviews through live performance rather than simply talking about magic.

If you're looking for a magician in Cheltenham, you can find more information about my performances, the types of events I cover and how I work.

And if you're planning a wedding, party or corporate event, the relevant Cheltenham guides provide more detail about how I can fit close-up magic into the occasion.

Because ultimately, the best magic isn't about the venue.

It's about what happens when I walk up to a group of people, borrow something from one of them, perform something they can't explain and leave them laughing about it five minutes later.

That's the bit I never get tired of.
