Creating My Own Card Magic: The Story Behind “Imagine”
One of the most rewarding parts of performing close-up magic is creating something that did not exist before.
Over the years, I have created many magical ideas. One of my favourite card creations is a routine called “Imagine.” I performed this to a couple who were thinking about booking me for their wedding.
After I performed it to them they booked me on the spot.
The idea behind it was simple:
Could I create a moment where a spectator does not just choose a card, but actually creates the magic themselves?
The routine begins with something completely ordinary. A blank playing card.
The spectator can examine it. They can see there is nothing printed on it, nothing hidden, and nothing unusual.
Then they sign the card, making it completely personal.
This is no longer just a playing card. It belongs to them.
The card is then folded up, and the spectator holds it tightly in their own hand. At this point, the magic is completely in their possession.
I am not holding the card. The spectator is. Then comes the impossible part.
I ask them to simply imagine a playing card.
They have a completely free choice.
After they have made their decision, they slowly open their hand.
The blank card they have been holding has changed.
The impossible has happened.
The card now reveals the exact playing card they were only thinking of moments earlier.
